I studied International Business and Languages with German and Spanish at DCU and was shortlisted as part of the EOP programme run by IBEC in my final year. I was called for an interview with Bord Bia, just a few weeks after my last exam and was offered a job as a Marketing Assistant in Bord Bia’s Paris office. The programme included part-time study for a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Business Development. The EOPs therefore attended a 2-week intensive course at DIT followed by a 1-week training programme at Bord Bia’s headquarters in Dublin before heading out to our respective markets.
My work at Bord Bia included assisting in the preparation to and attending trade shows, editing and distributing a newsletter on Irish food and drinks for French buyers, researching various categories within the French food and drinks market and providing Irish food and drinks companies with regular updates on that market. The projects were so varied, no two days were the same and Paris is an amazing city to live and work in! I also had the opportunity to use my German language when Bord Bia transferred me to work in their German office for three months. I participated in the largest trade fair for food and drinks in the world – Anuga – which took place in Cologne in 2011 and which proved to be one of the many memorable experiences of my 18-month work placement. I will also never forget the time I accompanied a group of 20 German buyers on a trip to Ireland to visit Bord Bia Quality assured farms as part of the new Irish Beef promotional campaign launched at the time.
Overall the programme helped me gain invaluable practical experience within Ireland’s dynamic food and drinks industry while studying for a post-graduate diploma. It is a tremendous stepping stone to my next career move and I would highly recommend it!
